About Maria Chavez Santos, MD

What Is Maria’s Professional Background in Medicine?

Dr. Santos is a board-certified Family Medicine physician with a deep commitment to the Carlsbad, CA, community. Before joining the TrueCare team, she completed her medical education at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and her residency at Hunterdon Medical Center.

Beyond the clinic, her clinical interests include metabolic health, nutrition, and specialized diagnostic services like obstetric ultrasound. She is also passionate about global health equity, frequently participating in international medical mission trips—including annual trips to her birthplace in Ecuador—to provide essential care to those who need it most.

How Would You Describe Your Care Philosophy?

My care philosophy is rooted in integrity and respect. I believe in partnering with patients through every step of their journey, ensuring I have explained things well so they feel empowered to make informed decisions.

If you were a fruit, what would you be? And if you were a vegetable, which one?

I would be a coconut because it reminds me of summer, which is my favorite season! As a vegetable, I would be kale. I just love kale, especially dino kale!

Where is your favorite place to go on vacation?

The Amalfi Coast! I went with my family in the summer of 2023, and it was the most memorable trip I have been on.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I am a night owl by nature, but I have made myself a morning person so I can wake up early to exercise.

Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.

I danced ballet and flamenco for several years growing up, and was learning how to play violin in the last few years.
