Medi-Cal offers free or low-cost healthcare to qualifying children and adults in the state of California. TrueCare accepts all forms of Medi-Cal, and can help you determine if you are eligible for the program. We can also assist you in selecting a program that’s right for you and/or your family, make sure you’re properly enrolled, and explain how to use your benefits.
Applying for Medi-Cal requires the following documents:
- Birth Certificate (or USA Passport, Naturalization Certificate or Permanent Resident Card)
- Social Security Card
- Income Verification – Income tax return, three most recent pay stubs or letter from employer (Letter must state how much the applicant/spouse earns and how often. Must also include employer name, address, date, and signature)
- Proof of child support received (letter or statement)
- Proof of California residency (water/ electric bill, CA ID or driver’s license)
As of May 1, 2022 – California expanded eligibility for full-scope Medi-Cal to individuals 50 years or older, regardless of immigration status. Those previously enrolled in restricted Medi-Cal have been rolled over automatically to full-scope Medi-Cal.

What enrollments can TrueCare help me with?

When can I enroll in Medi-Cal, CoveredCA, or CalFresh?
Medi-Cal and CalFresh have enrollment year round, so you can apply at any time. CoveredCA open enrollment is usually November through January. For most qualifying life events, you have 60 days from the date of your event to enroll in a Covered California health insurance plan or change your existing plan.
How long does the application and approval process take?
In most cases, your application can be completed in one meeting with a TrueCare Programs & Resources Specialist. The approval process takes about 45 days.
