In collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos Flapjacks for Backpacks event, TrueCare brought free healthcare services to families in North San Diego’s diverse communities
Kids are back in school! An exciting time of year when many parents perform the annual ritual of taking their children to the doctor for wellness checks and shopping for school supplies. But some children don’t get the opportunity to pick out new backpacks, pencils and pens, and that’s why TrueCare™ joined forces with the San Marcos Boys & Girls Club for a great community event.
On August 14, a nice summer morning, you could feel the excitement in the air as the San Marcos Boys & Girls Club began gearing up for their inaugural Flapjacks for Backpacks event. Kids and adults set up rows of backpacks filled with supplies and a table covered with exciting books for the back-to-schoolers to take. Families were greeted with friendly smiles as they approached the entry table, and children were grinning from ear to ear as they picked up free books and a backpack. Parents were overcome with gratitude, knowing their children would return to school with a new backpack filled with goodies.
To our delight, many families stopped by the TrueCare booths to utilize the free healthcare services we offered. TrueCare’s mission has always been about making healthcare available to everyone, no matter their background or income status. We knew partnering with the San Marcos Boys & Girls Club would help us reach out and connect with our community, so we rolled out our new state-of-the-art Mobile Wellness Unit.
Families enjoyed touring the new mobile health center while their kids received a free dental screening. Just outside the mobile unit, we offered oral hygiene cleaning demonstrations, chiropractic education and blood pressure checks for adults. In our continuing efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, we also provided free vaccines to people 12 and older.
TrueCare’s President and CEO, Michelle D. Gonzalez, , and Cathy Bauer, President & CEO of the Boys & Girls Club San Marcos, were delighted with the size of the crowd – more than 550 people in attendance! As the two inspirational leaders strolled around mingling with the crowd, their pride in putting on the event and their commitment to the health and welfare of the communities they serve shined like the midday sun.
Each year, TrueCare offers comprehensive and culturally sensitive healthcare experiences to nearly 65,000 patients, many of whom are underinsured or have no medical insurance. To continue making such a significant impact on San Diego families, TrueCare is encouraging San Diego citizens to join our mission of making healthcare accessible for all. We can’t do it alone – the support of our community partners is critical. Your generous contributions will help provide critical health visits to community members in need, support transportation services to help patients get to their appointments, expand our mobile wellness capabilities and most importantly, save lives.
