Mimi Mateo, director of Employee Wellness and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at TrueCare, was named a 2023 HR & Diversity Professional Leader of the Year Honoree by the San Diego Business Journal. Mimi believes all women and their families deserve support as they grow and make important health decisions. That’s why she began her career with a master’s in midwifery. In addition to caring for patients, Mimi spearheaded TrueCare’s support for female patients with gestational diabetes and Type 2 diabetes, a health issue that disproportionately impacts Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian American women.
In 2020, Mimi transitioned over to her current role, coordinating TrueCare’s wellness and DEI efforts, in response to the pandemic and social unrest. She set out to help all team members establish a true sense of belonging at work. She established TrueCare’s Wellness and DEI Committees, and under Mimi’s guidance, the committees work diligently to level-up the organization’s systematic approach to both life-work balance, parity and inclusion.
“If people feel like they belong, they are well at work,” Mimi says. “That is the bridge that brings wellness and DEI initiatives together at TrueCare.” And, she adds, “If you don’t start with selfcare, you won’t be able to help anyone else.”
