- Knock it Out of the Park!
1. Make Sure Your Resume is Updated
The first step in preparing for an interview with TrueCare is ensuring that your resume is updated. You want to showcase all the wonderful things you’ve done in your career, but we don’t need an exhaustive, detailed description of each job. Give us a highlight reel!
“When you’re coming into the interview, you want to ensure that you have clearly outlined all the things you’re most proud of,” said Becky Sanchez, the Talent Acquisition Director at TrueCare. “It’s important to keep those things in the forefront of your mind because, a lot of times, we’ll be asking behavioral-based questions and asking about times when you did specific things or faced certain challenges. Candidates often don’t even realize how much great work they’ve done, especially when they were on autopilot in previous roles,” she said.
Take some time to review the job description, reflect on things that you will have to do in this role, and map out how you have demonstrated that you can perform these functions in your work history. Have those examples ready to talk about in the interview.
2. Prepare to Talk About Yourself
After outlining your achievements, you want to be ready to talk about yourself. This is an often overlooked step when people want to prepare for an interview at TrueCare.
“Something we see a lot is that people can have a hard time talking about themselves,” said Sanchez. “This makes sense, too, because of the old-school way of thinking that you want to show that you’re a team player and you did everything as a team. But a lot of times, as a recruiter, if we hear somebody saying this, it means they didn’t do the work themselves. So we’ll ask questions about the specific role you played in certain achievements,” she said.
Be ready to share the details of your accomplishments and how you contributed to them. But, most importantly, be confident about your work history. It’s OK to be proud – you’ve done amazing things.
3. Prepare to Talk About Gaps in Your Resume
Next, look at your resume, identify any gaps, and be ready to discuss them candidly.
“Friends and family ask me questions all the time about what to say if an interviewer asks why they left a job because they’re worried about saying something that sounds negative or unprofessional,” said Sanchez. “Say whatever you are comfortable with, but it should be the truth. We’re all human, so we will be understanding,” she said.
We know that workplace dynamics can be difficult. Sometimes, people simply don’t mesh, or sometimes, work environments aren’t entirely positive. Whatever the reason you left, prepare a diplomatic but honest answer to these questions.
“If you didn’t get along with your manager, for example, you can still address that situation tactfully,” said Sanchez. “The reality is most people leave jobs because of their manager. If there was an issue where you weren’t feeling it anymore, there are things you can say that don’t have to come across a certain way. You can simply say you weren’t feeling supported or you didn’t think you could thrive in that environment anymore.”
4. Be Responsive and Flexible
Remember – even before you meet an interviewer for the first time, you are laying the groundwork for a positive interview experience for both of you. To prime an interviewer for a great and constructive discussion, you should make an effort to be responsive.
If you are unresponsive, we may also feel you are no longer interested or disengaged. A big part of interviewing is demonstrating that you want to work with an employer.
“A lot of people forget to check their spam folders, which creates not just lapses in communication but a lack of preparedness for the interviewee if we send important details they miss,” said Sanchez. “A good trick to ensure you are seeing and responding to everything in a timely manner is to add us to your contact list so our emails don’t go to spam. If you don’t have time to check your email, we also offer an option to receive text message updates,” Sanchez added.
It’s also important to add that, from a scheduling standpoint, it can be difficult to find times when everyone is available, especially with leadership at our organization, so try to be flexible, too. Don’t worry; we are more than happy to extend that same courtesy to accommodate you and find a time that works for both parties!
“A lack of flexibility and responsiveness can substantially slow down this process,” said Sanchez. “Even at the background check stage, we get a lot of candidates where drug tests are issued at a certain time, and we only have a certain amount of days for these tests to be valid. If you don’t respond, we have to restart that process,” she said.
5. Have Your Professional References Prepared
You will also want to ensure your references are sorted as you prepare for an interview at TrueCare because we do ask for them. Keep in mind that we only want professional references, meaning references from leadership and peers.
“Your references need to be from people who know how you work, how you fit into a company culture, and what you bring to the table professionally,” said Sanchez. “You will need to have someone who you reported to as well as your peers. Essentially, we want people who can speak on your work experience,” she said.
Collecting references can be a drawn-out process in some cases, so give yourself and the people you are asking plenty of time to respond so you are not cutting it too close. It also helps to let your references know ahead of time to expect a call from us.
6. Get an Idea of Who We Are
We also recommend reading through our website to get an idea of who we are. Read our About Page to gain an understanding of our mission and culture. As a mission-driven organization, our culture is very important to us, so it’s important that you align with them.
Our core values are:
- Excellence
- Integrity
- Teamwork
- Quality of Care and Service
- Innovation
- Stewardship
It is also important that you believe in our mission to improve the health status of our diverse communities by providing quality healthcare that is comprehensive, affordable, and culturally sensitive. If you can, frame your answers in the interview through this lens.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt to take a look at our leadership team, whether it’s on our site or on LinkedIn. This can give you some good insights into who you will be engaging with.
7. Review Example Interview Questions
The final part of the process to help you prepare for an interview at TrueCare is to review example interview questions and have answers rehearsed. A good place to look for these questions is on sites like Indeed or GlassDoor.
Another option is to look back at our posting, review the responsibilities and then think of a time when you demonstrated that in your previous roles.
Obviously, there’s no guarantee you will be asked these questions, but they will still give you an idea of what to anticipate. Some examples of interview questions to expect during a TrueCare interview include:
- Why do you want to work in healthcare?
- Are you bilingual?
- Do you have HHA EXCHANGE experience?
- What did your last job entail?
- What are your strengths?
- What do you think you can improve on in your professional life?
- How do you practice being a trauma-informed clinician?
- What does teamwork mean for you?
- How do your colleagues and clients describe you?
- How have you handled a difficult situation or phone call?
- Tell us about your experience working with an underserved community.
- How do you perform under pressure?
- What’s a difficult problem you had to solve, and what was your process?
- Tell us about your leadership skills and experience.
- Give us an example of a time you had to deal with “change” at work.
8. Knock It Out of the Park!
Now that you have taken all the necessary steps to prepare for your interview, all you have to do is be confident and be you. Because we know you got this.
Interviews can be intimidating, but we want you to be as relaxed as possible. Maybe this means listening to your favorite song to put you in the zone, or maybe it means hitting the gym that morning to calm your nerves.
Whatever pre-interview rituals you have, remember that we scheduled an interview with you for a reason. We can’t wait to meet you and see you knock it out of the park!
