At TrueCare, we know that bringing your whole self to work is just as important as bringing your experience. That’s why, when you interview with us, we want to hear about more than your credentials. We want to hear your story, why you chose this field, what motivates you to serve others, and how you envision being part of a team that leads with compassion. However, we know that these aren’t skills that are easily reflected on a resume, so it is essential to demonstrate them throughout the interview process to truly shine.

Regardless of the role you are applying for, one thing remains the same: we are seeking individuals who are both skilled and passionate about making a positive impact in their community. If you’re preparing for an interview with our nonprofit organization, we look forward to meeting you! Here’s how to stand out in an interview with TrueCare by showcasing your soft skills

What Are Soft Skills in Health Care

Soft skills refer to the personal traits that shape how you interact with others, such as emotional intelligence, collaboration, stress management, communication, active listening, patience, adaptability, and teamwork.

In health care, soft skills are especially important because they create a positive patient experience and work environment.

What Are Interpersonal Skills

Interpersonal skills are the soft skills that relate to how you interact with others, build relationships, resolve conflicts, and contribute to a team, often referred to as people skills.

These skills are vital at TrueCare, where cross-functional teams collaborate to deliver comprehensive care to our patients. In your interview, consider how you can talk about your ability to collaborate, listen, and contribute positively to a team.

Ultimately, these are the moments that bring our mission to life.

Why Are Soft Skills Important in the Workplace at TrueCare?

At TrueCare, soft skills enable us to foster a culture where compassion, collaboration, and trust flourish. They show up in how we comfort a nervous patient, how we support a struggling coworker, and how we bring our best selves to the team, day in and day out.

Soft skills translate to creating real relationships, which is important because building rapport with both your colleagues and patients is key to providing the best possible care.

Noah Vanrell, a Health Center Manager at TrueCare Vista Way, offered some advice to applicants like you based on his experience. He encouraged prospective applicants to lean into empathy, not just experience, when preparing for a job interview at TrueCare.

“When I interviewed, I thought I had to prove what I could do,” Noah said. “Obviously, that’s important, but I learned it’s not the most important quality here. This is an organization unilaterally committed to its mission, and I quickly realized what mattered most was how much I cared. That’s a really special part of working here, and what TrueCare looks for and values across the board. You must be aligned with the mission and maintain a positive attitude. That’s what I would say to people who want to work here,” he explained.

How to Make Yourself Stand Out in an Interview at TrueCare with Soft Skills

During your interview, we encourage you to discuss what motivates you and specifically what led you to pursue a career in community health.

Why are you passionate about serving populations who are too often underserved? What does it mean to provide care without judgment? This mission-driven approach is crucial because it helps us understand how you align with our mission to support our diverse patient population.

Just as importantly, we want to know how you work with others and what interpersonal skills you have. Showcase how you define teamwork.

“Do you have any stories about a time you helped a team member who was having a tough day or went the extra mile for a patient? That’s always worth sharing,” Varnell said. “Do you have a long history of serving the community? That should be at the top of your list when it comes to what you want us to know about you. That’s the kind of enthusiasm and care at the heart of our culture! Make sure we see that you live and breathe it,” he beamed.

Ultimately, soft skills matter when you work at TrueCare. Essential qualities such as empathy, active listening, adaptability, and an unencumbered spirit of collaboration are crucial to thriving at our non-profit organization.

Martha, a valued member of our TrueCare Ramona team, highlighted an important but often overlooked consideration. Sometimes, you don’t know you want to work in this field until you’re in it, and you can develop this passion as long as you have the heart and drive.

“Back when I first started, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do,” said Martha. “My priority was taking care of my family. I started working at TrueCare as a medical receptionist, and then I began handling referrals. Over time, I fell in love with the work and realized how fulfilling it is. Now, I’m a medical assistant, and I love it. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else, which I would have never imagined when I started,” she smiled.
