For many patients, reliable transportation can determine whether they receive the care they need. For nearly 13 years, Erika Flores has helped make access to care possible as TrueCare’s Transportation Supervisor.
For Erika, her work is personal. She understands firsthand how difficult it can be for families without reliable transportation to access health care because members of her own family experienced those challenges. Today, she takes pride in making health care accessible for all, stating, “It’s nice being part of a solution that’s been a very big problem for a long time for our community.”
How Did Erika Build Her Career at TrueCare?
Erika joined TrueCare nearly 13 years ago as a Patient Service Advocate before the organization had a Call Center. At the time, transportation was just one of many responsibilities in her role. As patient needs continued to grow, what started as a small shuttle program quickly became its own department, creating an opportunity for Erika to step into leadership.
Today, she helps oversee a transportation program that serves patients across TrueCare’s communities, making it easier for people to keep appointments and access the care they need. Over the years, she’s watched the program evolve from a small shuttle service into one that helps far more people get to and from their appointments.
How Does Erika Help Patients Access Care?
When Erika first began working with the transportation program, two shuttle vans could transport only about 20 patients each day. Today, through TrueCare’s partnership with Uber, the team coordinates transportation for approximately 100 patients each day, helping people across the region get to and from their appointments.
Sometimes that means arranging transportation for a new mother after giving birth. Other times, it means helping someone who doesn’t have reliable transportation get to an important medical appointment they otherwise might miss. Erika says patients regularly express how much the service means to them, often ending conversations with a heartfelt thank you or blessing. Those moments remind her that something as seemingly simple as a ride can have a lasting impact on someone’s life.
The Mission that Made All the Difference
For Erika, her decision to stay at TrueCare for over 13 years has always come back to one thing: the mission. She says she never has to wonder whether the organization’s commitment to patients is genuine because she sees it reflected every day. She hears it from patients who continue choosing TrueCare because of the care they receive, including her own grandmother. She experiences it in the gratitude patients express during everyday conversations. As Erika explains, “The mission isn’t just words; I actually see it day in and day out.”
What Is It Like to Work at TrueCare?
For Erika, TrueCare’s workplace culture is evident in the supportive relationships she’s built with her coworkers and the sense of community they create together. Whether it’s potlucks, games, or ice cream socials, employees make time to celebrate one another and build genuine relationships outside of their daily responsibilities.
Erika also credits her longtime leader at TrueCare, Ana, with creating an environment where employees feel trusted and supported. She appreciates Ana’s open-door policy and hands-off leadership style, which gives employees the freedom to do their jobs while knowing support is always available whenever they need it. That balance has helped Erika continue growing throughout her career while feeling confident she always has someone in her corner.
