What Makes the TrueCare Team Unique, and How Does the Collaborative Environment Help Prevent Burnout?
Being a provider at TrueCare is being part of something bigger.
When you join the TrueCare team, you can rest assured that you will never be on your own. We operate with a team-based approach to ensure that you have the support and resources you need to provide the best care. Everyone has each other’s back.
Dr. Rachel Lum Ho, a pediatrician, talked about how TrueCare sees providing support and a cohesive team culture as key to preventing burnout.
“It helps me feel a lot less burnt out because I feel like I don’t have all of that pressure just on me, as an individual, to try to solve all these really complicated problems. For example, imagine I have this really depressed teenager, and they really need therapy. In some practice settings, you can’t really predict the outcome. You won’t know if or when they’re going to have therapy. It might be nine months from now, and I don’t know if they’re going to follow up. But what if they can’t afford to wait nine months? Here, I can do a warm handoff to one of our integrated behavioral health therapists and know they’re going to be assessed that day and have a safety plan in place. It doesn’t feel like the health and welfare of patients is resting solely on your shoulders; we all carry it together,” said Dr. Lum Ho.
Dr. Joanna Kingdon, also a pediatrician, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the ease of collaboration and saying it reduces the pressure and stress that come with the job.
“Every medical assistant, every nurse, and every panel coordinator, they’re all really open and warm. They’re open to any question I have, and I had a lot of questions in the beginning. I can ask anyone any question and it’s never an inconvenience to that person. Same with providers, if I just want to pick their brain about something, everyone’s really kind and open. Of course, they know they can ask me a question, too, so we all collaborate and see each other’s patients every so often. It helps us reduce the pressure while providing better care because we get different perspectives and insights,” said Dr. Kingdon.
Dr. Alice Ma, a dentist, shared that the team is actually her favorite part of the job.
“Honestly, my favorite thing about working here has to be the camaraderie. I come in, and I’m excited to see my coworkers because they’re people that I laugh with. We’re a really tight-knit group. Everyone remembers what we talked about and what we were gonna do that weekend, and it’s just like coming in and being surrounded by friends that you just really, really like spending time with. So it doesn’t really even feel like work sometimes because we’re always cutting up and joking, and we’re always joking with the patients, too. They seem to enjoy it. It really livens up the mood for patients, which is really important in a place where you have to be vulnerable and build trust,” smiled Dr. Ma.

How Does TrueCare’s Community-Centric Mission Influence the Daily Work of Providers?
For many of our providers, the mission to serve the community is what brought them to TrueCare in the first place, and they say that this mission-driven approach to helping those who need help the most makes the work substantially more meaningful.
Dr. Kingdon, a San Diego native, revealed that she chose TrueCare because its “mission and origin story resonated the most” with her, noting she wanted to work at a federally qualified health center that serves the local population.
“I’ve always thought that health care was a right and not a privilege, and it feels good to help people get the quality of care they deserve,” smiled Dr. Kingdon.
Similarly, Dr. Ma said she was also drawn to TrueCare because her values align with the organization, and she could tell that everyone in the organization felt the same, creating a shared sense of purpose that empowers everyone to amplify their impact.
“Honestly, there’s a fantastic staff here, and the most incredible thing about it is that we’re all like-minded in the sense that we’re all here to help others and be of service to others. So we have the same goal and work toward it together. We’re all here to take care of people. It’s really refreshing when you come in, and your whole team feels the same way that you do. And the patients are grateful, too, even over the smallest things. They’re just so happy to be here and grateful for the services and the opportunity to actually chat with a dentist. It makes it super rewarding,” added Dr. Ma.

What Does Work-Life Balance Look Like at TrueCare, and How Does the Organization Support Its Employees?
The team also expressed that they can tell TrueCare understands the importance of a sustainable career and the importance of helping them thrive professionally and personally. According to Dr. Kingdon, they truly value work-life balance.
Dr. Maria Sebiane, a lead clinician, said that this is invaluable because a healthy work-life balance is critical for longevity in the field.
“Having a good work-life balance shouldn’t be a benefit: it should just be the status quo. It’s the only way people can continue in this field for decades, so I’m always teasing and having fun at work, because if you’re not joyful, you shouldn’t be at work. Especially when dealing with kids. Kids know if you’re in a good mood,” said Dr. Sebiane.
She also appreciates the flexibility that allows team members to live in various locations and still have an easy commute.
