This November, Californians will vote on Prop 44, a ballot measure that will impact community health centers like TrueCare, the patients who rely on us, and the health care system we all depend on.
If passed, Prop. 44 would require health centers like TrueCare to spend 90% of their annual revenue on activities and resources defined as supporting patient care. While this sounds straightforward, the proposition doesn’t take into consideration essential patient care services such as telemedicine, care navigation, enrollment, medical records and more.
Clinics will face costly penalties if they don’t meet the spending ratio. These additional fees may force community health centers across California to cut services or close – leaving millions of patients without access to the care and resources they need.
For patients and families, access to community-based care can make all the difference. In an op-ed for El Latino, TrueCare board member and patient Carmen Huertero shares how a blood sugar screening at a free mobile health clinic led to her father’s diabetes diagnosis and changed the course of his life.
“For me, this is deeply personal. Every family deserves the same chance my father had to receive timely, life-changing care.” – Carmen Huertero
Carmen’s story is one of many. TrueCare urges voters to learn more about Prop. 44 and vote No to protect access to community health care across California.
